Cobot flanges at IMTS, not a humanoid on the mill
UR Gen 7 and a FANUC tending cell land at IMTS. Metalworking orders stay hot. Humanoid headlines are real, and out of this series’ scope.
Week of 11–18 Sep 2026. IMTS 2026 (14–19 Sep, McCormick Place) was a Physical AI week for machine shops: cobot flanges, machine-tending cells, and digital-thread ramp-up on the show floor — not a humanoid-CNC boom. The machining news is product and booth cells, not independently verified factory deployments. Demand backdrop: U.S. metalworking orders still running hot. Humanoid headlines this week are real and out of lens.
What landed
11 Sep: DMG MORI Chicago Innovation Days
DMG MORI’s own page, dated 11 Sep, frames a parallel U.S. in-house show at Hoffman Estates (13–18 Sep): 23 manufacturing solutions, eight 2026 premieres. Automation named on the page: RPS 6 pallet storage on NHX 5000 Gen 4, AWC 34 on NMV 3000 DCG Gen 2, IMTR robotic automation on NTX 500, plus bar-feed partners. New Condition Agent is described as standard on ERGOline X / CELOS X for spindle, axis, and changer diagnostics. Vendor copy, not a third-party floor report.
14 Sep: IMTS opens
AMT-owned IMTS opened with 1,788 exhibitors (400 first-time), 1.17 million sq ft, and 80,697 registrants that morning, attendance on pace to exceed 90,000. Opening remarks cited July 2026 U.S. metalworking orders of $605.8 million and YTD $4.03 billion, up 37.1% vs 2025, plus five consecutive months above $500 million.
14 Sep: Universal Robots Gen 7
Hardest product news of the week. UR launched Gen 7 at IMTS: PolyScope X; g-Series arms UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300, UR18g-950 (payload kg / reach mm); an AI-ready tool flange carrying data, power, and safety for cameras and sensors; built-in force-torque, impedance control, RTDE. Company says the CB7 Core has 40% more compute in a 30% smaller footprint and still talks to e-Series and UR Series arms. Inbolt CEO Rudy Cohen: Inbolt vision runs natively on the UR controller: no external vision PC. Hathout’s “>100,000 industrial deployments” is installed base, not Gen 7 shipments.
14 Sep: FANUC Physical AI cell
Modern Machine Shop, 14 Sep: FANUC’s dedicated Physical AI section includes a CRX cobot tightening bolts on a moving engine block with part tracking, plus a digital twin pairing a cobot with ROBOGUIDE and NVIDIA Isaac Sim. The Automated Production System cell is the machining hook: RoboDrill D74CS machines parts, a CRX-10iA/L tends the machine, an AMR moves parts, Renishaw inspects, then a wash. This is floor reporting of a booth cell, not a job-shop go-live. FANUC’s 3 Sep preview (Google Cloud kitting, “Vibe Coding,” 500i-A CNC, ROBODRILL DC series, wet-machining G-code) is pre-window. Do not date it as this week’s news. AeroMech Insider already noted FANUC has not published tracking accuracy, part speed, latency, or recovery for the moving-part demo.
14 Sep: Vention MachineAgent
PR is 10 Sep (one day outside the window); floor debut is 14 Sep. MachineAgent: plain-language prompts to cell layout and industrial program, on a MachineMotion controller with NVIDIA Jetson and Isaac. Live demos include FANUC CRX-10iA CNC load/unload, UR12e bin picking, FANUC LR Mate path planning, UR20 seventh-axis. Company claim of “up to 99% first-pick success” on GRIIP bin picking is an unaudited vendor spec.
14 Sep: Sandvik Coromant on the floor
MMS: the Coromant booth is meeting rooms and Manufacturing Wellness scorecards, not a tooling wall. Tooling runs at Mazak, Okuma, JTEKT, Methods, Tsugami, Select Machining Technologies, and Shibaura. Intelligent Manufacturing partners named on the floor: Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Vericut, Verisurf. Sandvik’s IM page lists East 133312 as the software hub. Cimatron’s agentic CAM Agent (3-axis toolpaths from geometry plus tool libraries) is undated: treat as on-floor software, not a dated launch. No public Sandvik machining-robotics product launch in-window.
14 Sep: Robotic spindle, with a limit
Setco’s end-of-arm spindle on a FANUC arm is for work that does not need ultra-tight CNC tolerances. The same source says aerospace/precision work below 0.002 inch still needs a dedicated machining center. Not a CNC replacement story.
15 Sep: AMB, DMG MORI + Renishaw closed loop
AMB Stuttgart runs 15–19 Sep. Metalworking International: MATRIS WPH robotic handling plus Renishaw Equator; the robot takes the part to the gauge; offsets go back to the CNC. Cleanest precision-manufacturing Physical AI-adjacent story outside Chicago this week. Trade recap of vendor architecture: no independent scrap or offset data.
16 Sep: USMTO July numbers
Gear Technology republished July: $605.8 million orders, −8.0% vs June, YTD $4.03 billion (+37.1%), units YTD +13.0%. AMT attributes the value/volume gap largely to automation mix, not just inflation. Job-shop orders June→July: value −1.3%, units +2%. Electrical-equipment orders at a 2026 high on data-center/grid demand; forging/stamping highest since Dec 2012. IMTS opening copy said the same July print was +55.8% YoY; Gear Technology has +55.2%. Prefer $605.8 million / +37.1% YTD / units +13%.
17 Sep: Siemens + TRAK “Meet at the Machine”
Robotics 24/7: Siemens and TRAK Machine Tools so shops can program, simulate, and validate while the machine is still being built. Mark Hindsbo claims this can “reduce ramp-up time by up to 50 percent.” Company claim, not a measured case study.
17 Sep: Manufacturing Wellness Report
First Sandvik Coromant global report, nearly 1,000 manufacturers, overall score 49/100. Nearly 1 in 4 have no access to manufacturing/process data; almost half lack clear team performance targets. 69% report at least some automation (partial, not end-to-end); 19% have a formal circularity policy. Partner collaboration scores highest, sustainability lowest. Fits the IMTS booth’s wellness-assessment pitch, not a robotics SKU.
Gaps / contradictions
- Booth ≠ plant. No independent report this week of a new Physical AI cell running unattended production in a job shop. FANUC / UR / Vention / Siemens numbers are vendor or show-floor.
- Same $605.8 million July USMTO print: RoboticsTomorrow / IMTS opening +55.8% YoY vs Gear Technology +55.2%. Use dollars, YTD, and units; flag the split.
- KUKA machine-tending and Okuma+Intrinsic AI cells were July previews. No in-window floor write-up found. Do not date them as this week’s news.
- Cimatron CAM Agent page is undated.
- X/Twitter in-window search returned no citable posts.
- Toyota’s 400k in-house humanoids (Nikkei, 18 Sep, clothes-folding photo) and UBTECH’s Liuzhou plant (designed 10k-unit capacity; Cruzr depalletizing/logistics, not CNC tending) are out of lens.
What to watch
- Post-IMTS (after 19 Sep) independent booth reports: does Inbolt-on-UR and FANUC moving-part tightening survive non-vendor cameras?
- Okuma 15 Sep 14:00 media event / Intrinsic cell, still unverified on the floor in this corpus.
- AMB closed-loop cell: any measured scrap/offset data, not just architecture.
- USMTO August print vs the “IMTS order bump” AMT’s economist previewed.
